Reporting and Assessment Glossary

Glossary - Years 7 and 8

Projected Grade Band

The Projected Grade Bands are an estimate of the outcome the pupil is most likely to achieve by the end of the GCSE course. It is a holistic view of future attainment based on test results, work in class, coursework elements, attitude and commitment to study, developing study skills and external factors that may affect the final GCSE grade.

NB: “+“ indicates improvement within a band. For example, if a pupil’s work in autumn falls in the 4-6 band but by spring there is improvement within that band, this will be recorded by the teacher as 4-6+.

GCSE Estimate

These allow schools to monitor pupil progress and are traditionally based on pupils’ results in KS2 reading and maths assessments (SAT tests) or CAT 4 tests in Year 7. Estimates include an element of stretch and challenge. Regardless of estimates, we remain focused on students’ well-being in school and their attainment across their subjects.

Projected A Level Grade

The Projected A Level Grade is an estimate of the grade that the pupil is most likely to achieve by the end of the course. It is a holistic view of the level of attainment based on teachers’ knowledge of a student’s test results, work in class, current grades, coursework elements, attitude and commitment to study including use of private study, developing study skills and external factors that may affect the final A Level grade.

A Level Estimate

This is an estimate of A Level performance that is calculated from a student’s average GCSE score.  These estimates are a nationally recognised benchmark that allow schools to more accurately monitor student progress.

Effort Grade – All Years

We place an emphasis on pupils having a positive attitude to learning and on their active involvement in class activities.  These are linked to our Personal Learning skills of: reciprocity, reflectiveness, resilience and resourcefulness.  The criteria for achieving the expected level of effort (E) are challenging, for example we expect that every pupil will demonstrate excellent behaviour so please be assured that if your child achieves mainly ‘E’ grades for effort we are happy with their attitude to learning.  Exceptional effort will be rewarded by AE or O grades and we encourage all pupils to aim high.

 O        Outstanding

 AE      Above Expected

 E         Expected

 BEA    Below Expected Attitude/Behaviour

 BEO    Below Expected Organisation

 I           Inadequate
