Double Trophy Delight

Year 7s and 11s return victorious!

It’s double delight for Spalding High School’s PE department after two year groups won their Lincolnshire County Cup finals, played at Sleaford Town FC on Thursday (April 30).

The U12s were crowned champions after beating Sir Robert Pattinson Academy, North Hykeham, 2-1 while the U16s went to a penalty shootout and sudden death following their two all draw against Sir William Robertson Academy, Welbourn, but ultimately retained the trophy they won last year.

PE teacher Amy Magnus was delighted with the girls’ achievements and praised both teams for their effort and resilience on the pitch.

She said: ‘Wow—what a day! To have two teams progress to the Lincolnshire County Cup final is a remarkable achievement for our school, especially with both matches kicking off at the same time— it was certainly a logistical challenge for the PE department!’

She described the U12 game as balanced at 0–0 at half-time, with Spalding playing into the wind but firmly in control and creating the better chances.

‘We continued to dominate possession in the second half. Two well-taken goals from Emily gave us a deserved 2–0 lead. Despite a late response from the opposition, the final whistle confirmed our year seven team as county champions in their very first season—an outstanding accomplishment. It was a true team performance, with every player contributing in different ways,’ Miss Magnus added.

The U16s, playing at the same time, had a first tense half, with a remarkable save from goalkeeper Freya to keep them in the match, although they headed into the break 1-0 down.

Miss Magnus added: ‘The team showed tremendous character in the second half, rallying together to equalise at 1–1. With just ten minutes remaining, Lexi delivered a perfectly executed corner that flew straight into the far side netting to give us a 2–1 lead.’

Their opposition equalised five minutes before the end of the game sending the tie to penalties. After five spot-kicks each, the scores were level at three all, with Freya producing more crucial saves. Spalding sealed the title in sudden death – making it the third time this team has won its county cup final.

‘What a game to mark the end of an incredible five years of football for the year 11s, being crowned three times county champions, national runners up, our furthest progression in the ESFA National cup and many more team achievements as well as individual player county representation,’ Miss Magnus added. ‘They have been an absolute pleasure to coach and set a very hard footprint for the younger years to follow.’
