Term 1 Sports Round Up

The 2026/27 school year has got off to a rapid start with sporting fixtures and GCSE PE activities. Here is a run-down on the events and achievements so far.
FOOTBALL
Kicking off the term both our Under 14 and Under 13 football teams began their journey in Round 1 of the England Schools Football Association (ESFA) National Cup. Facing St George's of Sleaford the U14s fired home a 6-3 win with the U13s similarly victorious against Kings School, Peterborough with a 4-2 result.
A week later, the U16s followed with a win in their first round of the ESFA Cup, against UppinghamVillage College. A number of regular players missed the game due to injuries or clashes of commitments. However, the twelve travelling players put in an amazing performance to come out on top. Kaelyn V scored both goals, one in each half – the second was a trailblazing shot into the top corner, resulting in a 2-1 victory.
As we entered October, our u13s travelled to Branston Community Academy to compete in Round 2 of the ESFA National Cup. An own goal from a defending corner in the first half was the difference between the two sides, narrowly losing 1-0. The team played really well against strong opposition and did well to keep the scoreline at 1-0. We had some chances to score but the defensive work, particularly of Lily and Maja, kept us in the game. A fantastic midfield display from both Edith and Maddie was vital in helping us both attack and defend. Player of the match was awarded to Maya who was ruthless in defence, winning every header and tackle in her vicinity.
The 9th October saw our U14s play against John Fernley College of Melton Mowbray in the ESFA National Cup. Coming from 2-0 down at half-time after a disappointing first-half display, the team produced a superb second-half turnaround, showing great character, determination and belief, to win 4-2 and book their place in the next round. The comeback began with a moment of relentless pressing, as forward Lily chased down the goalkeeper and forced a mistake, allowing the U14s to pull a goal back and spark the revival. From there, two outstanding pieces of individual brilliance from Maddie turned the game on its head! Moments of quality and composure in key areas gave the opposition little chance and demonstrated exactly what this team can produce when playing with confidence and desire. The fourth and final goal came after capitalising on a defensive error, with the loose ball falling kindly before being calmly slotted into an empty net to complete the comeback by Annalise. Player of the match went to Maddie for a dominant display in midfield, rewarded by two goals. To overturn a two-goal deficit and run out 4-2 winners was a fantastic achievement. The contrast between the two halves could not have been greater, with a much-improved performance after the interval seeing the squad play with energy, purpose and quality, seeing them safely through to the next round.
A big thank you went out to Lexi who refereed, having qualified last year. Lexi had a firm grasp on the game and was ably assisted by Freya running the line. Both Freya and Lexi have previously played pivotal roles in their school team for their age group, so it is great to see them continuing their participation in other roles within the game.
Our students weren't the only ones enjoying themselves on the football pitch this term! Our Sports Leaders spent time helping School Games - Lincolnshire South East for an amazing day of girls' football. The year 6 & 6 students who took part were obviously having fun and loved showing off their passion and determination. Our magnificent seven sports leaders did a fantastic job coaching and refereeing the girls.
NETBALL
The SHS netball season has not got off to its best start, with two defeats from two matches. Our Year 11s have so far faced a stronger Bourne and a few days later suffered another loss against University Academy Holbeach. The team are very much looking forward to getting some wins under their belts, so watch this space!
CROSS COUNTRY
Monday 12th October, students represented the School at the second race of the Fenland League Cross Country competition, held at Hampton College. Once again, our runners produced some excellent performances against strong competition from schools across the region.
A special congratulations goes to Felicity, who continued her outstanding start to the season by winning the Year 7/8 Girls' race. This fantastic achievement means she has now made it two wins from two races, cementing her place among the league's top performers. There was also an impressive run from Iris, who secured an excellent 4th place finish in the Year 9/10 Girls' race. Competing in a highly competitive field, Iris showed great determination and consistency throughout the course.
We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part and represented the School so well. Their commitment, resilience and sportsmanship were evident throughout the event, and we look forward to seeing them compete again in the next Fenland League fixture.
GCSE PE
Year 11 GCSE PE students recently took on a new challenge at Lincoln Rock Climbing Centre as part of their Non-Exam Assessment (NEA). For their GCSE PE qualification, students are assessed in three different sports, combining both team and individual activities.
The climbing trip provided an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills and work towards achieving an individual activity score. The session required students to demonstrate much more than physical strength. Balance, coordination, concentration, decision- making and resilience were all essential as they worked their way around the climbing walls and tackled increasingly challenging routes. Throughout the session, students showed great enthusiasm and determination as they supported one another.
