Rugby

A group of enthusiastic Year 8 students attended a T1 Rugby Festival in May, joining forces with students from Boston Grammar school to create two competitive teams for the event.

Despite only having three practice sessions to learn the game and rules, the girls showed fantastic determination, teamwork, and skill throughout the day. They quickly developed their confidence and understanding of the game, supporting each other brilliantly both on and off the pitch. They certainly 'sparkled' with the amount of glitter they were wearing! 

Both teams performed exceptionally well against strong opposition, demonstrating excellent collaboration with the Grammar and a positive attitude in every match. Special congratulations go to the Grey Team, who won their pool and proudly brought home a shield to celebrate their achievement!   Sending a massive thank you to Year 12 Sports Leaders for running the T1 festival. 

Building on this, our Year 9s competed a few weeks later with a combined SHS & Spalding Grammar School team taking top spot.  This was another new team and staff were thrilled to see how well they had progressed.

Most recently, students from Year 7  put in an outstanding performance at their T1 Rugby Tournament last week, competing against five other schools.  Throughout the day, the team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, impressive skill, and fantastic teamwork, making our school incredibly proud.  Remaining unbeaten, the girls won three games and drew two, scoring ten tries in total, securing them the tournament title.   Well done to our try scorers; Nyah (5 tries), Alice (2), Charlotte (2), Maddie (1), Emily (1).  Every try was made possible by the outstanding teamwork shown by the entire squad, with players working tirelessly for one another.

Well done to the whole team on becoming T1 Rugby Tournament Champions—an excellent achievement and a wonderful example of teamwork, resilience, and respect.

Athletics

We are proud to have had a number of students competing in several athletics competitions over the last few weeks, achieving some amazing results.

Back in May, teams from years 7, 8 & 9 took part in the Track & Field Cup.  Showing their passion for sport against stiff competition, the Junior team brought home 4^th place overall with the Inter team picking up 7^th place.

This event was followed closely in June with participation in the County Athletics Championships.  We were thrilled with our fifteen students who represented South Lincolnshire and did so exceptionally well, being outstanding ambassadors both on and off the track.  A special well done went to Khanyi and Mbali, who both achieved an impressive 2nd place finish in the 100m sprint for their age groups. Their outstanding performances earned them qualification for the Anglian Championships, which was a remarkable accomplishment.

More recently, Spalding High School’s athletes travelled to Princess Royal Sports Arena (PRSA), Boston, to compete in the South Lincolnshire Schools’ Athletics Championships.  The school was proudly represented by girls’ teams in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, with all students demonstrating excellent determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day. Competing against some of the strongest athletes from across South Lincolnshire, the girls produced an impressive set of results.

The Year 7 and Year 9 teams both enjoyed outstanding success, finishing 2nd overall in their respective age groups. The Year 8 team secured a commendable 4th place, while the Year 10 team finished 6th overall after a series of competitive performances.

Special congratulations to Emily (Year 7) and Kaelyn (Year 9), who both produced outstanding performances to become South Lincolnshire Schools Javelin Champions in their respective age groups.

These achievements reflected the hard work and commitment shown by all the athletes, both in training and on the day of the competition.  Congratulations to everyone who took part and represented the School so positively. The PE department is incredibly proud of all the competitors and looks forward to seeing their continued success in future athletics events.

Cricket

Cricket also proved to be a major success story, with the U13 outdoor cricket team crowned South Lincolnshire champions. Their unbeaten run throughout the competition demonstrated not only technical ability but also excellent teamwork and strategic awareness. The team’s performances have set a high standard for future cricket squads to follow.

Rounders

Finally, we come to Rounders, where teams have represented the High School in a number of matches and tournaments over the last few weeks. 

In June, the Year 10 rounders team competed in the South Lincolnshire Schools’ Sports Association Rounders Tournament.

The first match was against UAH, with them playing 25 good balls. Some excellent fielding enabled us to get their whole team out in 24 balls with some brilliant catches and efficient fielding to prevent scoring and running the opposition out at the second post. With some great batting, the Year 10s scored 8 ½ rounders, leading to a win of 8 ½ to 3. Well done to Bridget for being awarded the opposition’s player of the match with some good batting and great pick-ups in the field. 

The second game was against Spalding Academy, who had also beaten UAH, making the game the decider for the tournament. This has been a competitive game for the last four years with both teams always within reach of a win.  Losing the toss, we batted first against some excellent fielders. We managed to score 7 rounders with some excellent hits and capitalising on any lapses in the field to score ½ rounders at second post.  However, despite some excellent fielding, we were unable to contain Spalding Academy’s big hitters and in a tantalisingly close game we lost by ½ a rounder. Well done to Katie for being awarded the opposition’s player of the match, some great bowling, a couple of catches and joint highest batting score.  As always, the Year 10 team conducted themselves brilliantly, with great teamwork and sportsmanship.

Building on the Year 10s performance, July saw our Year 8s crowned champions of the South Lincolnshire School Sports Association (South) Rounders Tournament after an outstanding and unbeaten campaign.  The team demonstrated excellent skill, determination and teamwork throughout the tournament, winning all three of their matches against strong opposition.

Spalding High began the day with an impressive 11 rounders to 6½ victory over University Academy Holbeach, showcasing confident batting and sharp fielding. Their second match proved to be a much closer contest, but the team held their nerve to secure a 5½ to 5 win against Bourne Academy. In their final fixture, the girls produced another dominant display, defeating Spalding Academy 8½ to 1½ to confirm their status as tournament champions.

The players worked brilliantly together across all three games, supporting one another and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the day. Their unbeaten record is a testament to the hard work and commitment they have shown this season.

A special mention goes to Annika, who was deservedly named Player of the Tournament. Annika impressed with her powerful and consistent batting performances, while also providing excellent encouragement and leadership in the field. Her positivity and determination were evident throughout the competition and played a key role in the team's success.

Well done to all the players on a fantastic achievement. Winning the Tournament is a remarkable accomplishment, and the team should be extremely proud of their efforts and the way they represented Spalding High School.

Later in the same week, the Year 9s faced UAH and Spalding Academy in two competitive matches. In the opening game against UAH, the team narrowly lost 8–6½. Although it took a little time for the players to settle into the game, there was some excellent batting on display, and the team showed great determination throughout.

The second match saw SHS bounce back in style with a fantastic 6½–3 victory over the Academy.  The team worked brilliantly together in the field, showing excellent communication, tactical awareness, and teamwork. Their batting was confident and consistent, helping to secure a well-deserved win.

Special congratulations goes to Violet, who scored the most rounders for the High School across the matches, and to Isla, who was deservedly named Player of the Match against Spalding Academy for her outstanding all-round performance.  Well done to everyone involved!

All in all, it has been an amazing few weeks of sport.   It is obvious to see that there are many of our students who are extremely talented on the sports field.  We are continually proud of the effort and determination that they show.
